Microsoft has confirmed that it has put its Surface 2 4G tablet up for pre-order in the UK, with fans able to get their hands on the device from May 8.  Though that means it’s about a month until you can actually pick up the 4G version of the Surface 2, you can pre-order it now.

The Surface 2 (4G) has pretty similar spec to the Wi-Fi only model.  It has a 10.6-inch display, with a resolution at 1920 x 1080.  It packs 2GB of RAM, supports USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 4, is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 4 processing chip and runs Windows RT 8.1.  The new Wi-Fi and 4G model is only available in the 64GB storage variety, and that will set you back £539.

Microsoft Surface

It sounds like a lot, especially when you look at it in comparison to the US, where the 4G Surface 2 is available for $679 (about £405).  However, it’s still a good price for such a high-end tablet, especially when you consider all the extra stuff you get for that.

Office RT comes bundled for free, meaning you can get access to programs like Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, andMicrosoft Excel.  You’d have to pay £100 for that on the iPad, so if productivity apps are your thing, that could sway you.  Users also get 200GB of OneDrive (the new name for SkyDrive, in case you’re not up to date) storage and unlimited Skype minutes to use for a year.

If you want the additional keyboard type cover for the Surface 2, that’s sold separately about £109.  It’s a shame that Microsoft hasn’t released a bundle that includes the Surface keyboard, as it’s a necessity to properly make use of the Office RT package.
