Apple Getting Closer to Releasing New Product LinesDale Wright
Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has opened up about the company’s plans, saying that it’s “closer than it’s ever been” to entering a new product category.
Cook has often promised that Apple will branch out into new products, so perhaps his comments don’t really reveal anything new. In the interview, Cook explained why it took the company so long to move into product categories, saying: “To do things really well, it takes time.”
He appeared to criticize Apple’s competitors for rush-releasing devices before they had properly finalized them, stating: “You want to take the time to get it right. Our objective has never been to be first. It’s to be the best.”
This might placate Apple fans who have been hoping for the release of an iWatch and iTV for some time now. Cook’s comments suggest that Apple’s not just dragging its feet and hedging its bets with branching out into new product categories: it’s taking the time to perfect every detail of devices so that its customers will love it. That’s the plan, anyway.
There’s no word as to when we might see these fabulous new products though. Cook said he’s really excited about what Apple is working on, and that their release is now closer than ever. When asked how close that could be, Cook laughed and said it was closer now than it was in January, yesterday or ten minutes ago. That’s not very helpful, but Apple’s known for not confirming anything about product release before they happen.
It’s not just hardware releases we could be looking at from Apple. Cook also discussed the possibility of mobile payments, as Apple already has the Touch ID fingerprint sensor technology to work with this. He said mobile payments are “an area of interest to us. And it’s an area where nobody has figured it out yet.” It sounds like Apple might also want to be the first in some areas after all, as well as the best.
