Samsung To Release Galaxy S5 Smartphone at February 24 Event?Dale Wright
Rumors are surrounding the Samsung camp today after the South Korean company announced its Unpacked 5 event for February 24. This seems to confirm that its next flagship smartphone – the Samsung Galaxy S5 – will be launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
MWC 2014 takes place in the Spanish city from February 24 – 27, and this new announcement seems to prove that Samsung is looking to take centre stage at that event. The tech giant has distributed invitations for its press event at the Barcelona conference, and though they don’t mention any hardware outright, we can be pretty sure that the Galaxy S5 will be showcased there.
The Samsung invitations are decorated with a large number five, sparking speculation regarding the S5. The event is to take place at 20:00 CET, but for anyone not in Barcelona, Samsung will be streaming it on its official Youtube channel.
What can we expect to see from the Samsung Galaxy S5? Rumors are indicating that Samsung will introduce a 64-bit processor into the phone, in an attempt to compete with Apple’s iPhone 5S. However, other reports appear to contradict this and instead suggest that there will be two models of the S5 released on February 25. A ‘Standard’ version of the S5 will run a 32-bit quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, while a more premium ‘Prime’ edition will be powered by an impressive 32-bit octa-core Samsung Exynos 5430 chip.
Samsung also appears to have moved away from shipping the Galaxy S5 with its own operating system, Tizen, and will instead provide the smartphone with a new TouchWiz UI, alongside Android 4.4 KitKat. Hardware-wise, the Galaxy S5 will reportedly have a 2K QHD display at 5.25 inches and a 20 megapixel camera capable of shooting 4K video.
Reports seem pretty split on Samsung’s rumored eye-scanning technology for the Galaxy S5: when one source says that it will definitely feature in the smartphone, another confirms that it has been scrapped. Rumors for the smartphone will probably solidify over the coming weeks, but one thing’s for sure: February 24 will definitely prove exciting.
