iPhone 5 is not the only new release!Dale Wright
All eyes have been on Apple’s iPhone 5 pre-sales this week, but that’s not to say other companies haven’t been making waves on a smaller scale. HTC has just announced a brand new range of Windows Phone smartphones that will take advantage of the new Windows Mobile 8 operating system when it’s released.
HTC will be launching two new handsets, the Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S. The former will cost around £399, while the 8S comes in at a lower £225 price point.
The Windows Phone 8X features a 4.3 inch HD screen, a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor, 16 GB of storage and an 8MP camera – all pretty standard stuff. The Windows Phone 8S is a trimmed down version with a smaller screen, a slightly slower processor at 1 Ghz, just 4 GB of storage and a lower-resolution camera capable of taking snaps at 5MP. Crucially, the 8S’ storage can be expanded but the more expensive model doesn’t have any memory card slots. On the flipside, the 8S doesn’t have a front-facing camera.
HTC are clearly aiming the new phones at a youthful audience as well as business customers. Both come in a variety of colours. The 8X will be available in black, yellow and blue, while its cheaper sibling will be available in grey, black, red and blue.
If you’re in the market for a Windows phone, don’t forget Nokia are also releasing the Lumia 920 soon. With a 4.5 inch screen, the specs for the Lumia are otherwise very similar to the HTC Windows Phone 8X, although the Lumia is thicker and heavier and boasts 32 GB storage and a very slightly better battery. One feature HTC have that Nokia is lacking is Beats Audio, a special way of amplifying music to sound better – according to HTC.
All three phones will be available in mid-November. If the iPhone 5 hype has left you cold, you’ll still have to wait until winter draws in before you have your chance to try out either of these new Windows handsets.
