With just four weeks to go before the big day, many of us are starting to think about Christmas shopping. Cyber Monday, which falls on the 5th of December in the UK, is the day huge numbers of people will go online to purchase gifts in the hope that they’ll beat the rush. As the first snow hits the UK, buyers are likely to go online to purchase gifts so they are not delayed by bad weather.
Retail analysts are predicting that this year will be the biggest Cyber Monday in history. Research by the price comparison site Money Supermarket suggests that we’ll each buy more than 4 out of 10 presents online this year, and the Centre of Retail Research says we’ll spend £13.4 billion via internet shopping alone. More than 1 in 10 presents will be bought using a smartphone, and traffic to big internet superstores such as Amazon will peak in the evening on Cyber Monday as parents hop online to buy presents for the kids. Experian predict 85 million visits to online shops in total in the run up to Christmas.
Internet usage across the board will be up; we’ll spend a combined total of 25 million hours on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook over the Christmas period, and many of us will be online on Boxing Day looking for bargains in the sales.
Meanwhile, high street retailers are starting sales early amidst predictions of poor takings in the run up to Christmas. Relatively warm weather has meant that far fewer of us have visited the shops to buy clothes, leaving stacks of winter woolies on the racks. Many shops are already discounting lines by up to 50% to try to lure people in before they spend all of their spare cash on gifts.
Cyber Monday falls one week earlier in the US as shoppers begin to look for gifts immediately after the Thanksgiving weekend. Sales in the US were up 22 per cent reaching an estimated total of $1.25 billion – an increase from $1 billion in 2010.
